Chevrolet Cruze and Captiva Android head units – what you need to know
The Chevrolet Cruze and the Captiva were the brand's two biggest sellers in Hungary, and both have the same problem: the factory head unit is now out of date, its screen small or absent, and phone connectivity is out of the question. The unit offered for the Cruze has a 9.7-inch Tesla-style portrait screen that fills the whole centre console – the dashboard still looks factory alongside the original ventilation and controls. The Captiva takes a 10.1-inch widescreen unit. As technical background, it is worth knowing that the Cruze (J300) was built on GM's Delta II floorpan, the same one as the Opel Astra J, and the Captiva shares the Theta platform with the Opel Antara. A shared floorpan does not mean a shared dashboard, though: the frame and wiring loom for the Opel models cannot be fitted to the Chevrolet, so you always have to choose the model-specific kit. On model years, note that the Captiva was given a substantial facelift in 2011, and the dashboard of the earlier 2006–2010 version is different – that needs a separate frame. How big a screen do I get for the Cruze?
The Cruze takes a 9.7-inch portrait-orientation Tesla-style screen that fills the whole upper part of the centre console. The factory climate and heating controls stay where they are; the unit only occupies the position of the radio and the storage tray above it.
Does the Captiva unit suit the 2010 model year?
No. The advertised kit was made for the post-2011 facelift Captiva built between 2011 and 2016. The dashboard and radio aperture of the earlier 2006-2010 version are different and need a separate frame - write to us and we will see what we can source for it.
Can a unit made for the Opel Astra J or Antara be fitted?
No. The Cruze is indeed built on the same GM Delta II floorpan as the Astra J, and the Captiva shares the Theta platform with the Opel Antara, but the shape of the dashboard and the radio aperture is completely different between the brands. We only recommend the Chevrolet-specific kit with its own frame.
Are the factory reversing camera and parking sensors retained?
In most cases yes. The factory camera picture and the parking sensor signal can be carried over to the new head unit with the supplied adapter - please state your car's specification in the order notes.
Is it still worth replacing the head unit in a Chevrolet?
Yes. Chevrolet withdrew from the European market at the end of 2015, so a factory navigation or CarPlay head unit is no longer available for these cars. An Android unit is therefore not just an upgrade but the only practical route - and it noticeably raises the car's used value too.
