Smart Fortwo Android head units (W451, 2006–2015) – what you need to know
Smart Fortwo W451 owners come to us almost without exception with the same question: will a proper Android head unit even fit in this tiny car. The answer is yes, but only if you choose a unit sized specifically for this body. The Fortwo's cabin is one of the smallest on the market and the depth behind the radio aperture is tight, so a universal, deep-bodied 2-DIN unit simply will not fit into the dashboard. The Smart Fortwo Android head units available from us go in place of the original radio with a model-specific frame and a plug-in wiring loom, so nothing has to be cut, soldered or trimmed. We stock two different kits for the W451 generation, because the centre console was reworked in the 2010 facelift. To identify yours precisely, do not rely on the year, because the year of manufacture and of registration can differ: the reliable method is a photo of the centre section of the dashboard, around the radio and the vents. The units come with an eight-core processor, an HD touchscreen, wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto support, GPS navigation, Bluetooth hands-free calling, a reversing camera input and a multi-language menu, and the factory steering wheel controls keep working after the learning procedure. It is worth knowing that Smart is the city brand of Daimler, the Mercedes-Benz group, and the W451 Fortwo was built in Hambach, France. The W453-coded Fortwo launched after 2014 is based on the Renault Twingo floorpan, with a completely different dashboard, so this kit does not fit that generation. Which Smart Fortwo generation is this head unit for?
The second, W451-coded generation, built between 2006 and 2015. We stock two versions: one for the pre-facelift dashboard and one for the post-2010-facelift dashboard. We currently have no model-specific unit for the W453 Fortwo that arrived after 2014 or for the Forfour.
How do I know whether my car is pre- or post-facelift?
The year alone can be misleading, because the year of manufacture and of registration can differ. The reliable method is a photo of the centre section of the dashboard: send it by e-mail and we will write back to say which kit fits.
Does a 9-inch screen really fit in a Fortwo?
Yes, because the unit is made specifically for this body: the screen goes into the original radio position and the mounting depth is matched to the W451's tight radio aperture. We do not recommend a universal, deep-bodied 2-DIN unit for the Fortwo, though.
What if the car originally had no radio, just a blanking plate?
That is common on the Fortwo. In that case, before installation you have to check whether the speaker and aerial wiring runs as far as the dashboard. If it does not, it has to be added; we are happy to help work out what is needed by phone.
