BMW E46 Android head unit: will it fit your 3 Series?

For the 1998–2006 BMW E46 there are Android head units with 7", 8.8" and 9" screens. We help you pick the size and explain what to watch out for on cars with the factory navigation.

Short answer

Yes. For the 1998–2006 BMW E46 there is an Android head unit designed specifically for this model, in 7", 8.8" and 9" screen sizes. All of them go in place of the factory radio. On cars fitted with the factory wide-screen navigation (blue-and-white connector) you need to check the connection carefully — we cover that below.

Will an Android head unit fit your E46?

If your car is a BMW 3 Series E46 built between 1998 and 2006, then yes. The E46 head units in our shop cover the whole 1998–2006 production period and fit in place of the factory radio, in the dashboard.

The key question is not the model year but the factory audio and navigation set-up. On cars with the basic radio the installation is usually simpler, while on examples fitted with the factory wide-screen navigation the connector is different. We cover that in a separate section.

If you are unsure, the safest thing is to check the colour of the connectors behind the dashboard, or send us your car's exact details. You will find the full E46 range in the BMW head unit collection.

Which screen size should you choose – 7", 8.8" or 9"?

All three sizes are made for the E46; the difference is the size of the screen and how it looks in the dashboard. The 7" is closest to the factory appearance, while the 8.8" and the 9" give a larger, more readable surface.

Model Screen Fit
BMW E46 7" 7" Matches the factory dashboard design and keeps the original look
BMW E46 8.8" 8.8" Larger screen, E46 1998–2006; check the factory navigation connector
BMW E46 9" 9" Larger screen, E46 1998–2006; check the factory navigation connector

The choice comes down to taste and the screen size you want. If the clean, factory look matters to you, the 7" E46 head unit is the way to go. If you would rather have a bigger, more readable screen, take a look at the 8.8" version or the 9" head unit.

What can an E46 Android head unit do?

The E46 units are touchscreen, Android-based multimedia systems. Phone mirroring (Android Auto, CarPlay) and navigation are core functions, and everything is operated by touch instead of the factory button radio.

The exact software and hardware specifications — memory, connectivity details and so on — vary from model to model, so always check them on the relevant product page. That is where you will find exactly what a given version can do.

Do the steering wheel controls and the factory amplifier keep working?

This is one of the most common installation questions, and the answer depends on the car's factory equipment. Android head units are generally built around the factory connectors, but exactly how the steering wheel controls and the factory amplifier can be handled is determined by the individual car's set-up and by the specific product.

What we typically see during installation is that different factory audio systems (basic radio, or the amplified or navigation version) need a different approach. So before you order, it is worth confirming your car's equipment level. If you are not sure, send us the VIN or the specification and we will help you choose the right solution.

What to watch for on an E46 with factory navigation

On E46s fitted with the factory wide-screen navigation, the connector behind the radio differs from the one in basic-radio cars — these have a blue-and-white connector. The product descriptions for the 8.8" and the 9" head units carry a separate warning about this case.

If your car has the factory wide-screen navigation, always check the colour of the connector before installation and read the product page carefully. If you are unsure, ask us before ordering — better to clear it up than to go looking for parts afterwards.

How does the installation work?

Installation starts with removing the factory radio; the new head unit then goes into its place and plugs back into the factory connectors. The steps, broadly:

  1. Carefully release the clips on the centre console and around the factory radio surround.
  2. Pull out the old radio and disconnect the factory connectors.
  3. Connect the new head unit to the factory wiring.
  4. Test: check the audio system, the steering wheel controls and the factory functions before fitting.
  5. Refit the head unit and clip the surround back into place.

To take the dashboard trim apart without damage, use the right tool. That is what the plastic trim removal tool is for — it lets you dismantle the centre console without scratching the surfaces.

Which accessories are worth adding?

A few accessories come in handy when replacing the head unit, depending on what you want to achieve.

If you also want a camera picture on the screen when reversing, take a look at the universal reversing camera, available in AHD, 720P and 1080P resolution with a 6-metre wiring loom. For clear hands-free calling the separate microphone helps. And for reading fault codes, the OBD2 Bluetooth diagnostic tool is compatible with the Android head units we sell.

All three models below are made for the 1998–2006 BMW E46; the difference is the screen size.

BMW E46 1998-2006 7-inch Android head unit with touchscreen

The 7" E46 Android head unit matches the factory dashboard design and keeps the car's original look.

BMW E46 1998-2006 8.8-inch Android head unit

The 8.8" E46 head unit gives you a larger screen. On cars with the factory navigation, be sure to read the warning in the product description.

BMW E46 1998-2006 9-inch Android head unit

The 9" E46 head unit offers the largest screen of the three. The warning about the factory navigation connector applies here too.

Frequently asked questions

Which E46 model years does this head unit suit?

The 1998–2006 BMW E46. All three screen sizes cover that production period.

Which screen sizes can I choose from?

Three sizes are available: 7", 8.8" and 9". The 7" is closest to the factory look, while the 8.8" and the 9" give a larger screen.

Is there CarPlay and Android Auto?

The E46 head units are Android-based; phone mirroring (CarPlay, Android Auto) and navigation are core functions. Check the exact details on the relevant product page.

What about cars with the factory wide-screen navigation?

These have a blue-and-white connector, which differs from basic-radio cars. There is a separate warning in the 8.8" and 9" descriptions. Check the connector colour before ordering, or ask us.

Can I keep the steering wheel controls?

That depends on the car's factory equipment. Android head units are generally built around the factory connectors, but for the exact solution it is worth clarifying your car's set-up — we are happy to help with that.

Do I need a special tool for the installation?

To take the dashboard apart without damage we recommend the plastic trim removal tool, which lets you remove the surround and the old radio without harming anything.
