An Android head unit is a touchscreen car stereo that goes in place of the factory radio and runs the Android operating system. Alongside the usual radio it offers GPS navigation, Bluetooth hands-free calling, Wi-Fi and phone mirroring (Android Auto, CarPlay). What is an Android head unit?
It is an Android-based car stereo, much like a smartphone, which you fit in place of the factory radio. You can still listen to the radio, but on the touchscreen you run apps: maps, music, phone.
A factory head unit is usually a closed system: it does what the manufacturer built into it, and it cannot be extended. An Android head unit, by contrast, is an open platform you can install apps on and connect to your phone.
There are two versions. The model-specific unit is designed for a particular car's dashboard, so it fits the factory aperture. The universal unit goes into a standard radio aperture (1 DIN or 2 DIN) and can be fitted to several makes.
What does it do that the factory radio cannot?
The most important differences are navigation and phone mirroring. Most factory radios cannot do these at all, or only with an expensive factory upgrade.

Android Auto and CarPlay mean that your phone's interface appears on the head unit's screen. That way you use your phone's functions on a larger surface, more safely, while driving.
Will it fit my car?
This is the most important question before you buy, and there are two ways to settle it. If there is a model-specific unit made for your car, that is the simplest: it fits the factory aperture and is built for the factory connectors.
Take a look at the model-specific head unit range and find your make, model and year. Every product page lists which models and model years the unit is compatible with. For example, the BMW E46 1998–2006 7" Android head unit matches the factory dashboard design.
If there is no exact model-specific unit, there is the universal head unit range. These go into standard radio apertures:

Will I lose factory functions after the swap?
It depends on the connection. Several universal head units in our shop come with an ISO connector — the standard, plug-in radio connector that lets the unit be wired to the factory loom.
On some cars the factory navigation, audio system or amplifier needs special attention. How much work is the installation?
A model-specific head unit is made for the factory aperture and the factory connectors, so installation is usually simpler than with a universal model. The exact process varies by car.
For removing the old radio, the plastic trim removal tool is useful: two levers with which the centre console can be taken apart and the old radio removed without damaging the surfaces. If you do not feel confident about the installation, it is worth using a specialist.
Which accessories might you need?
Several useful accessories can be paired with the head unit itself:
