What is a dashcam good for?
The main benefit of a dashcam is that it gives you evidence in a disputed situation. In a bump or an accident, the footage shows who drove into whom, who failed to give way, and what the traffic light was doing. That speeds up establishing liability.
A few typical situations where the footage is worth a lot:
- a bump in a car park or at a junction, where it is one account against another;
- a deliberately provoked accident ("cash for crash");
- recording vandalism or a scratch;
- capturing the route of a good summer trip as a memento.
An important limitation: a dashcam does not protect you from an accident, it only documents it. Nor does it bring back the damage — its value is the evidence.
Do you actually need a dashcam for a summer trip?
If you are on the road a lot, the answer is usually yes. Traffic increases in summer: on motorways, coastal roads and in unfamiliar foreign cities there is more chance of a bump and of a misunderstanding. A continuously recording camera is most useful then, because it documents exactly those crowded, unfamiliar situations.
If, on the other hand, you drive rarely and on familiar routes, a dashcam gives peace of mind more than daily benefit. The decision comes down to how much time you spend driving and in what kind of traffic.
What resolution is enough for a car camera?
The resolution decides how readable a number plate or a sign is in the footage. The higher the resolution, the sharper the detail — at the cost of more space on the memory card.

In practice, the higher resolution really matters when you need to read a number plate from close up in good light. At night and in bad weather, the field of view and the night-vision capability count for at least as much as the raw pixel count.
How does the dashcam get its power?
A dashcam runs on power, so the way it is supplied determines how convenient it is to use. The dashcam we stock connects to the head unit over USB — that is, the camera takes its power from there, and the picture appears on the head unit.
The practical consequence: the camera is powered together with the head unit. When the head unit switches on, the camera works too. Exactly how it behaves depends on your head unit's settings, so if you are unsure about this, write to us before ordering.
Which memory card does it need?
The footage goes onto a MicroSD card inserted in the camera, not onto the head unit's own storage. There are two things to know about our dashcam:
- the MicroSD card is not included, you need to buy it separately;
- the camera handles a MicroSD card of 32 GB maximum.
Stick to the 32 GB upper limit, because the camera may not recognise a larger card. Memory cards typically record on a loop principle: when the card is full, the oldest footage is overwritten. That way there is always space, but it is worth saving older material in time if it matters.
