Choosing a reversing camera: universal or model-specific?

Short answer

Choosing a reversing camera can start down one of two roads. A universal camera is cheap and fits almost any car, but you have to drill or glue it in place. A model-specific unit fits into the factory number plate light, badge or boot handle, with a factory look, but only suits that one model. If you want it to be invisible, buy model-specific; if you want flexibility and a lower price, go universal.

Universal or model-specific — which belongs in your car?

If you do not want to fuss over the installation and the main thing is that the camera ends up exactly where the factory would have put it, then model-specific is the right choice. If, on the other hand, there is no exact fit for your car, or you are simply after the cheapest solution that works, a universal camera can be fitted to any make.

In practice, what we typically see during installation is that the customer does not even know whether a shaped camera exists for their car. For many models it does: a unit that clips into the number plate light, or into the boot release handle, or built into the badge. These need no drilling, and from the outside nothing gives away that extra electronics have been added.

What is the difference between a universal and a model-specific reversing camera?

A universal camera is a small standalone housing (typically for a 20–25 mm hole, or glued to the bumper), while a model-specific one is moulded to the shape of that car's factory part. Both deliver the picture the same way, as an RCA video signal; the difference is in the mechanics and the appearance.

Universal reversing camera

You put a universal camera wherever it fits: above the number plate, in a hole drilled in the bumper, or on a separate bracket on the boot lid. The advantage is that it suits any car, and if you change cars later you can move it over. The downside is that the installation shows, and setting it up (angle, height) is down to you. The hole is typically 22–24 mm in diameter.

Model-specific reversing camera

The model-specific unit goes into the factory number plate light or the release handle, with its own connector. The dimensions are made to measure (for example Ford Focus 86×32 mm, Toyota Corolla 58×37 mm, VW 76×33 mm), so you should only buy the one made for your model year. In return it looks as though it had been there from the factory, and water does not collect behind it.

Which gives the better picture — does a FullHD reversing camera matter?

Yes, but not in the way you might first think. A FullHD (1080p) camera is sharper and works with less noise in low light, but the head unit's input and the quality of the RCA cable also set a limit. A good FullHD reversing camera shows its worth when the head unit's analogue video input can handle the signal.

The practical difference shows at night and in the rain: the better sensor gives a more readable picture where a cheaper, older camera only produces blurred patches. How much work is fitting a reversing camera?

Fitting a reversing camera to an average car takes 1.5–3 hours, and the hard part is not the camera but running the video cable from the boot to the dashboard. We take the power from the reversing light, so the camera is only live in reverse gear and the head unit switches over automatically.

The cable is run under the sill, along the edge of the carpet. At the boot lid it has to be threaded through the rubber concertina — this is where most DIY installations come unstuck, because a stiff cable is hard to push through. That is exactly why it is worth working with a ready-made RCA video cable of the right length, rather than joined-up pieces. In the shop you will find 6, 8, 10, 15 and 20-metre versions, including a 10-metre RCA video cable, which is enough in most cars to go from the rear light to the head unit.

If you do not want to run a cable

For anyone who would rather not run the video cable through the car, there is a compromise: the wireless reversing camera adapter handles the picture transmission over radio. Note that the camera still needs power, so the wiring at the rear stays — only the long video cable is avoided. Slight latency and sensitivity to interference are the drawbacks.

Will I lose factory functions if I fit a camera?

No. A reversing camera is a passive accessory: it does not touch the factory electronics, it only connects to the reversing light supply and to the head unit's video input. The factory parking sensors, the steering wheel controls and the braking system are untouched.

There is one pitfall: if your car already had a factory camera tied to a manufacturer system (for example some VW group models), its signal has to be carried into the aftermarket Android head unit with a separate adapter.
